(1) Effects on the Mammary Glands: During lactation, the mammary glands continuously secrete milk under the influence of prolactin, storing it within the mammary alveoli. Oxytocin triggers the contraction of the myoepithelial cells surrounding these alveoli, thereby facilitating the ejection of milk from the lactating glands.
(2) Effects on the Uterus: Oxytocin exerts a potent contractile effect on the uterus; however, the pregnant uterus is particularly sensitive to this action. Estrogen enhances the uterus's sensitivity to oxytocin, whereas progesterone has the opposite effect.
(3) Effects on Social Shyness and Autism: Oxytocin can assist individuals who feel socially marginalized due to shyness in overcoming their feelings of social inhibition. However, intranasal oxytocin administration does not produce this effect in individuals who are already self-confident.
(4) When one is in high spirits or experiences a strong sense of belonging, the hypothalamus synthesizes oxytocin and the pituitary gland secretes it, resulting in the alleviation of stress. Concurrently, the oxygen supply to the body's tissues increases significantly.
